- Is the boss in?
- The boss is out. The boss is always out. That is how you know it is the boss.
- What do I get for fourteen dollars?
- A name on a state form. The hand fills it in the way it was explained once. Beyond that, ask the boss.
- Who is the hand?
- Whoever was standing nearest when the job was explained. That was a while ago. The hand has not changed. The explanation has faded.
- Who else hires out for this?

- Where does the mail go?
- On the boss's desk, which is in the boss's truck, which is out. It is the safest place on the ranch because nobody can find it.
- What happens if the company gets sued?
- The process server asks for the boss. The hand says the boss is out. Then the state's rule for a company with nobody home takes over. It is on the Wyoming page, and the boss said to point people there.
- Why only one state?
- The ranch is in one. The truck has not crossed the line. Other states have other bosses.
- Can I speak to someone with authority?
- The hand has the authority to say the boss is out. That is the full extent of it and we use it a lot.
- Does the price ever go up?
- The boss set fourteen. Changing it is a boss job. See the first question.
- What is the difference between you and the ranch registered agent at forty-one?
- Twenty-seven dollars and a fence. They own the fence. We were told to ride it.
- What is the most the boss would ever pay out?
- The fees from the three months before the trouble, which is $3.50. The boss set that too. The boss sets everything and is out.
- Can you let me go?
- At any time, for any reason or none, without notice and without refund. It has happened to every hand on this ranch. Now it can happen to you.
- Will the boss ever be back?
- The boss says so, every time, from the truck. We have stopped setting a place.
